Rudnik nad Sanem (city of Rudnik by the river of San) is often called the "Polish Capital of Wicker".
The Rudnik School of Wicker refers to a traditional craft and artistic practice associated with the town of Rudnik nad Sanem, in southeastern Poland. This region, particularly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, became a renowned center for wickerwork and basketry, which remains a vital part of its identity and economy today.
The Rudnik School of Wicker originated in the rich natural environment of the area, which provided abundant willow shrubs (Salix), the primary material for wickerwork. Local artisans honed their skills over generations, developing sophisticated techniques and unique designs that set Rudnik's wickerwork apart.
During the late 19th century, when Galicia was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the wicker trade in Rudnik flourished. The demand for high-quality, handcrafted goods such as baskets, furniture, and decorative items encouraged the establishment of workshops and schools dedicated to teaching wickerwork.
